House Peacock is located on the outskirts of a small seaside town in Suffolk in a residential area, typically consisting of generous examples of two and three-storey detached houses.Save this picture!© Bene RedmannWith its surrounding dense vegetation the design appears as an inverted hortus conclusus (literally: enclosed garden) which conceals most of what happens inside of it.Save this picture!© Bene RedmannAlmost all neighbouring dwellings are recessed from the roads, which allows the abundant greenery to become the major lineament of the immediate context.Save this picture!Floor PlanThe proposed design tries to embrace this quality while corresponding to the owners’ broad space requirements. In order to not disturb this sensitive equilibrium of greenery and buildings the proposed design distributes the program over three volumes as opposed to one extensive development.Save this picture!© Bene RedmannThe single story compound divides the site into three different areas, the less private driveway that makes the link to the entrance onto the road, the main courtyard as the heart of the arrangement and the “wild” garden in the East of the property.Save this picture!SectionsWhile the proportion and topography of the site as well as the lush greenery defined the general framework, the owners’ versatile interests and day-to-day requirements called for a contained spatial background as opposed to a design that comes to the fore.Save this picture!© Bene RedmannProject gallerySee allShow lessIs India’s Plan to Build 100 Smart Cities Inherently Flawed?ArticlesShelter Global Announces Winners of 2017 Dencity CompetitionArchitecture News Share Projects United Kingdom Lead Architect: last_img read more

US firms use staff-friendly measures as retention toolOn 10 Apr 2001 in Personnel Today Previous Article Next Article Family-friendly working: Studiesshow contrasting aspects of how employers are tackling work-life balanceThe retention oftalent is the main motivation for employers to invest in work-life balanceinitiatives, according to US research.Staff retention wascited by 71 per cent of respondents as their primary reason for implementingwork-life programmes. This was nearly twice the number who indicated thatrecruitment is the driving factor. Employee morale ranked second. The research, titledSurvey of Work/Life Initiatives 2000, suggests that the employers which were consideringthe adoption of popular work-life balance practices two years ago went on toimplement the programmes. Co-author DanaFriedman claims that this shows how employers are putting more importance onstaff retention, morale and recruitment in a tight labour market. The most prevalentwork-life benefits offered are casual dress and reimbursement of tuition fees, offered by 90 per cent of employers.Nearly one in five ofthe employers surveyed, by Bright Horizons Family Solutions and William MMercer, sponsors a childcare centre. Back-up care is alsogrowing in popularity as a solution for employees in need of childcare on anemergency or holiday basis. The survey of morethan 450 US organisations suggests that, to be successful, work-life balancepractices must be aligned with the organisation’s business needs andstrategies. Fifty-five per cent ofemployers consider them as part of an overall employer-of-choice strategy. More than a third ofrespondents incorporate work-life balance practices into relocation efforts.Friedman said,”Leading companies recognise that work-life initiatives can contribute totheir cutting-edge competitiveness in a tight labour market. “Not only do theyoffer the most generous and innovative initiatives, they focus on creating asupportive work environment as a way to become the employer of choice in theirrespective industries.”www.wmmercer.com/us-news By Mike Broadlast_img read more
