Ben Koufie attacks Herbert Addo over CHAN disaster

By

first_imgOne of the best coaching brains in Ghana Ben Koufie has lashed out at coach Herbert Addo insisting he did not take the country’s best players to the African Nations Championship (CHAN).The local Black Stars made a disastrous outing at the tournament in Sudan, crashing out in the first round of the group comprising South Africa, Zimbabwe and Niger. In a veiled attack on Addo, Kouffie, a member of the Technical Study Group (TSG) for the CHAN, told the GNA in Sudan that the players are no where near the best in the country’s Premier League.“They cannot claim to be the best in Ghana neither do I think that they are. I cannot tell exactly what went wrong with the team but certainly these are not the best in Ghana,” Koufie told GNA Sports in Khartoum.“I watched two games and I was not impressed with their output. They were not playing like Ghanaians. We have a brand of football;entertaining, aggression and imagination but they never exhibited any of such.”The owner of Berekum Arsenal, Yakubu Moro, has called for a probe into the quality of player taken to the tournament insisting some club owners influenced the coach. The last time Wellington beat Mulvane it was in 2005, a 28-13 victory that probably no one really remembers except for the football players and their parents of that particular team.Since that point, Mulvane has won. After two straight victories in 2006 and 2007, there were two years when the two teams didn’t meet. Then in 2010, Mulvane proceeded to rattle off four straight wins. The frustrating thing is, none of those games were a beat down suffered by the likes of Andale. There were a lot of “what ifs” in all four games. Interestingly, in the three previous years, Wellington entered the game at 1-0 district wise, having beat Clearwater twice and Rose Hill last week. Mulvane has been 0-1. Yet after the evening was over, both teams were 1-1 and Wellington would go on to lose its final regular season game. The playoffs, such an annual record breaking tradition just four years ago, has now become as elusive as a date with the prom queen for the Crusaders. And all momentum has been busted by Mulvane.Again, the scenario presents itself again. Last week, Wellington beat Rose Hill 33-21 and Mulvane lost to Ulysses 36-29 in a game that was considered a classic out west. The Crusaders are 5-2 while Mulvane is 2-5. Everything on paper appears like Wellington should win this game. But that may not be the case.Mulvane is playing its best ball of the season. Wellington is banged up.“Dave Fennewald does an excellent job of maximizing his talent,” said Tyler Ryan, Wellington head football coach of Mulvane’s long tenured coach. The Wildcats are a lot like Collegiate in they run a lot of formations.Mulvane always seems to have that multi-dimensional running quarterback, who can get you all kinds of yards. This year is no exception. Quarterback R.J. Rieger is a 5-8, 170 pound senior and is the team’s leading rusher and passer. He who has thrown 1,180 yards this season and has rushed for 421.Jaden Dulaney, a 5-8, 150 pound, senior has 464 yards receiving.Three of Mulvane’s losses have come to Collegiate, Andale and Buhler. But when the Wildcats traveled out to Ulysses, they turned a lot of heads. The two teams were tied on four different occasions throughout their game, but it was Ulysses Ian Rudzik scoring from 20 yards out to win with 2:35 to play. For Wellington, the Rose Hill game was a gut check. It will need another to win Friday night by doing what it is doing – getting contributions from those, who have stepped in for those who have been injured. The prognosis with Reichenberger is still up in the air, as of this morning. Ryan confirmed Monday that Reichenberger’s days as a wide receiver is over after injuring his finger. Last Friday, he played defense and still kicked. But he had a physician’s visit this week. At this time, there’s doubt he will even suit up.Last week, Remington Gilkey did a great job stepping in for Reichenberger at wide receiver, catching some key passes late in the game.Wellington was without its top defender Adam Condit, who didn’t play not because of an ankle sprain he suffered against Collegiate, but because he was sick. He should be back as will be all the people who have been fighting injury- albeit the one’s lost at the beginning of the season due to ACL tears. If Wellington wins tomorrow, the Dukes will be in the playoffs no matter what happens in Ulysses. Not only that, it will be the first time they will have won six games in a season since 2009.And let’s not forget it will end a rather irritating streak by Wellington’s biggest rival. There is a lot riding on this game Friday night in what will be the biggest one this season.———————WELLINGTON-MULVANE GAME AT A GLANCE:Wellington (5-2) at Mulvane (2-5), Friday at 7 p.m. 8910Chris KopTE6’1193 Injury situation: It is what it is. 269Ethan RedfordRB5’6140 7412Vince AstOL6’0175 5710Lukas SoriaOL5’9155 3712Jaden HinesRB5’7195 789Braiden BureshOL5’10215 799Andre FowlerOL6’1230 7112Skylar BrandOL5’11220 Intangible facts: There are way too many variables to adequately analyze Wellington’s playoff scenarios at this time. But we will try.  The best scenario for Wellington is to win, period. That will give the Crusaders two victories heading into Ulysses and give them the tiebreaker with Mulvane and Rose Hill. Wellington will clinch a playoff berth if it wins and Ulysses beats Rose Hill. There are ways to really make this confusing. Let’s say Rose Hill beats Ulysses by more than 12 points and Wellington wins. Get yourself a drink because we will be here awhile explaining the various playoff scenarios. A misconception is 13 points are the maximum for tiebreakers. That was changed a couple years ago to 21 points. So that skews things a bit more. If Mulvane beats Wellington and Ulysses wins, the Crusaders will still be in the playoff hunt but would need to beat the Tigers out there. Points will be a factor.  If Rose Hill wins and Mulvane wins then that would put everyone at 1-1 in District 7. That would be chaos, but it would be simple as well. The winners of the next game would go to the playoffs. The losers would stay home. Yes, there’s too much to think about here. So let’s remember this one undeniable truth. As long as Wellington takes care of business it will be going to the playoffs regardless. 279Malachi TidwellRB5’7118 Wellington’s roster:  1212Zach BodkinsTE6’0175 10-10 Wellington 34 Wichita Collegiate 38 312Adam ConditTE6’1190 Series history: Wellington once led this series 25-2.
